Additional information on the projects of
Bayer CropScience and Bayer MaterialScience in China

Bayer CropScience launched a supplier qualification project in China in 2005 that has since been introduced throughout that subgroup’s daily operations. The subgroup uses a questionnaire in that country to determine which current and future suppliers observe acceptable occupational health-, safety-, environment- and quality-relevant (HSEQ) standards and are suited for further improvement measures in this area as close partners. From the group of suppliers that satisfy these requirements, Bayer CropScience uses criteria such as dependability, price and supply capacity to select a company for a particular product. This supplier then has to undergo a detailed audit procedure so that particular weaknesses can be identified and improved through further measures. Bayer CropScience gives recommendations in this context and offers support. The system has now been fully established in China, and its expansion to other Asian countries is currently being planned.

Also in China, Bayer MaterialScience has installed a Transport and Distribution Safety (TDS) team to ensure that logistics service providers used by BMS perform their work in a manner consistent and compatible with BMS’ s health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ) policy & standards.

This team has developed audit protocols for various logistics services that take into account both internationally accepted standards and the actual on-site situation. Since 2004 the team has carried out a large number of audits involving Chinese transport service-providers. In this connection, one of four transport companies was rejected by the TDS team in 2006 as this supplier did not satisfy the BMS requirements. The TDS team has also introduced a vehicle safety check at the gates to the Bayer premises in the Shanghai Chemical Park. The goal is to ensure that the accepted transport service-providers also observe the safety standards. Only vehicles that satisfy the BMS standards are permitted to enter the Chemical Park.
